A more common occurance is just general irritation. Ask yourself the following questions-
- Did you get pierced at a professional studio that uses high quality jewelry? If the answer is no, it may be a jewelry quality issue.
- Have you removed or changed the jewelry recently? If the answer is yes,and the piercing was previously fine, it may be a jewelry quality issue.
- Does my piercing have extra length on the post that gets caught and leaned on often? If the answer is yes, this could be the cause of the irritation. See the Aftercare page for more about “Downsizing”.
- Have you bumped, snagged, hit, slept on, or gotten any beauty products in the piercing recently? If the answer is yes, your piercing may just be reacting to the trauma.
- How often are you cleaning it? If your answer is “I don’t”, regardless of the age of the piercing, this could be the cause of the irritation. Dead skin from in and around trhe piercing can build up and cause lots of different propblems.
- What do you clean you piercing with? If the answer is anything except wound wash saline or warm water (see our Aftercare page for more details), this could be the cause of the irritation. See the Aftercare page for more specific cleaning information and downloadable care sheets.
- Do you specifically dry your piercing off after cleaning and showers? If the answer is no, or you’re not sure, ask yourself if your piercing seems raw and “wet”. If the answer is yes, moisture may be the cause of the irritation.
- Have you noticed you roll onto the piercing when sleeping? If the answer is yes, excess pressure could be the cause of the irritation.
If any of these questions helped you figure why your piercing may be irritated, most of these situations can be solved by getting better quality jewelry in your piercing, being more gentle with it, focusing on gentle cleaning twice a day, and making sure you’re drying off your piercing more thoroughly.
